Burberry was founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856, this truly British heritage brand focused on outerwear attire through its early years, using gabardine and hardwearing water resistant yet breathable fabrics, these fabric were years ahead of there time. Burberry has always prided themselves on forward thinking.
In 1914 the British war office commissioned Burberry to adapt its officers coat to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare, this resulted in the birth of the "trench coat", which even today is still an iconic garment in the Burberry collection. The iconic Burberry check was created in the 1920’s and used as a lining for it trench coats.
In the late 1970’s Burberry became a much sought after brand with the cult movement of the members of the football firms across the UK, and through bands such as Oasis and the Happy Mondays in the 90's. It was later on that Burberry rebranded itself and brought in Chris Bailey who re-shaped the company and bringing a fresh feel and look across all product departments while still keeping the history of the brand at the forefront of the new format. Since 2006 onwards the name Burberry is back as one of the great British Heritage brands of today.
