LACOSTE CLOTHING René Lacoste founded La Chemise Lacoste in 1933 in partnership with the owner of the largest French knitwear manufacturer of the time, André Gillier. They set out to produce high quality tennis apparel and designed to now world famous pique polo shirt with a crocodile on the chest. In the early 1950s Lacoste added colour versions to the popular tennis whites they were producing and over the next decade, Lacoste established itself as the status symbol of the serious sportsman. Ever the staple of the preppy wardrobe, the Lacoste polo shirt became the polo shirt of choice on the terraces of British football grounds in the 1980s. Over the years Lacoste have developed a collection to encompass a wider choice of products including, the Lacoste lambswool sweater which has become a modern classic, outerwear, t-shirts, shirts, jeans and accessories.
