Alexander McQueen was born in London in 1969, he left school at 16 and went into an apprenticeship with Saville Row tailors Anderson and Sheppard. He later moved to Gieves and Hawkes before mastering pattern cutting at theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans. After a stint in Milan, he moved back to London to complete his master's degree at Central Saint Martin's. His MA collection in 92 was famously bought in its entirety by Isabella Blow. Within ten years McQueen became one of the most respected fashion designers in the world. He became the chief designer at Givenchy in 96 where he worked until 2001. His achievements have been recognised through endless awards such as a CBE from her Majesty the Queen and GQ Menswear Designer of the year. The diffusion line McQ was launched in 2006.
